When my alarm went off at 5:30 am (I’m attempting a new experiment: early rising), it took me a while to realize I could now eat bread. Bread! And then I had another thought: porridge.
And so, after my hour of yoga by candlelight and incense, I made Britain's beloved breakfast – swirled with cinnamon, sprinkled with nuts and seeds. Even though I’d made it countless times in the past, this morning it was the best porridge on the face of the planet. It was still dark and I kept the room that way, allowing all my senses to be focused on this bowl of wonderfulness I hadn’t touched for the 21 days I’d been on my cleanse. It tasted of heaven, and that single spoonful of maple syrup stood out in my mouth like never before.
I spent a good hour at Planet Organic in Fulham for a post-detox stock-up. So far I’d resisted the cranberry pecan sourdough, which wasn’t hard at all given that at mid-morning I had my now customary banana blitzed with frozen strawberries, soy milk and ground flax seed. I’m telling you, when you eat all the right things there’s no time – nor room! – left for anything other than good stuff.
By evening I decided to cross-pollinate two blogs. The sweet potato falafel with yogurt-tahini at FatFree Vegan Kitchen caught my eye, and I had mentally filed Krista’s recent post about Barrafina’s pine nut and raisin-laden (sorry, sultanas) spinach. I thought the two would make a nice combination, and I was right.
All in all, a perfect day. In fact, I only just remembered this also spells the end of my he-tox, one that may well continue given that dabbling in veganism might prove to be an unintentional male deterrent – possibly more potent than not having a TV (more on that later).

haha on the 'not having a TV' dig. Glad you finally see the humour in it. Really enjoyed your he/de-tox ruminations.

Thanks! Oh dear, I didn't mean for it to be a dig. I guess laughing and crying are two sides of the same coin...

I prefer the laughter side of that coin too. Dig or not, well said.
Great post, Jess. Can't wait to try the falafel when I get back. Yummy.
